DC Yoga Week begins May 13 through May 20.  Bethesda’s Simon Says Yoga, about ten minutes from Friendship Heights, will be participating in the event by offering free and $5 yoga classes. Yoga on the Mall will also take place May 19 from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Events for the Family

The Strut Your Mutt  Dog Parade and Festival starts May 19 at the Woodmont Triangle Area at Norfolk and Woodmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda. There will be activities for kids, adults and of course, dogs. Be sure to check out the dog parades, dog contests, and a dog adoption show. If you want to register your dog for the event, be sure to do so by May 18. The registration fee costs $25.

The 17^th annual Imagination Bethesda children’s street festival takes place June 2 on Auburn and Norfolk Avenue. This free event features a wide array of activities that include arts and crafts, language learning, face painting and live entertainment.

Arts and Entertainment

Less than ten minutes from Chevy Chase Village, Bethesda’s Bella Italia on Hampden Lane will be showing the film Cinema Paradiso. The movie starts at 1 p.m. on May 23. There will be popcorn and Pellegrino.

The Bethesda Artist Market will feature the work of 25 local artists, who will have their creations up for sale. Browse through paintings, jewelry, photography, pottery and more. Starting June 9, the event will be held on Norfolk Avenue from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Here’s a summary of recent market activity in Chevy Chase, Maryland:

• Currently there are 44 home sales pending as well as 162 active listings.
• This means that the pending ratio on the Chevy Chase real estate market is 21.4 percent, suggesting that there aren’t as many qualified buyers as there are homes for sale.
• Homes priced between $800,000 and $1 million have the highest number of pending contract currently.
• Meanwhile, homes priced under $200,000 have the highest number of active listings with 24 listings.
• The average list price for all Chevy Chase properties is around $1,098,933.
• During the last six months, 156 contracts have closed with an average sold price of $826,542.
• Homes priced between $600,000 and $800,000 saw the highest number of closed listings during that period.
• Also, 17 listings have failed to sale and have been subsequently taken off the market in the last 6 months.
• Chevy Chase homes priced under $200,000 saw the largest number of failed listings with 3 properties.

What is a bike sharing system?

A bike sharing system would allow Chevy Chase and Bethesda residents to access bicycles from various stations around downcounty. Bicycles can be taken and dropped off at any station nearest the user. Aside from the environmental benefits, a bike sharing system could allow for faster travel time when compared to other modes of public transportation.

How will it be set up?

The project will be divided into two phases, with 29 stations planned for the first phase and 50 stations planned for the second phase. The entire system is slated to cost over $2.1 million. Although grants and bonds have been approved for the program, more funds will still be needed to meet the cost.

How close will the bike sharing system be to Chevy Chase?

The list of potential places for a bike sharing station include: Bethesda, Friendship Heights, Medical Center, Silver Spring and Takoma Park. The exact locations within these areas have yet to be decided.

How much does it cost?

The entire program is estimated to cost $500,000 a year to upkeep. Cost of usage will likely be based on membership fees similar to the Capital BikeShare system.

The Capital BikeShare system offers a $75 yearly membership. There are also options available online that offer shorter time spans for smaller fees. For instance, a 24-hour membership costs $7 while a 30-day membership costs $25.  Keys or unlocking codes are provided, allowing users to access the bicycle based on their type of membership.
